May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Each year since 1949, May has been observed as Mental Health Month in the U.S. This began as a way to bring attention to the importance of mental health issues.
The theme this year is “Back to Basics,” with a goal of providing foundational knowledge about mental health and awareness of resources available to those who may need them. Mental Health America offers a downloadable toolkit with fact sheets on how to recognize mental health issues and find mental health support, printable posters to encourage awareness, social media images and posts you can share to help fight the stigma surrounding mental health, and outreach ideas and additional resources you can use to promote awareness in your community.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) also provides a Mental Health Awareness Month Partner Guide that provides actionable ways you can get involved in improving the mental health care system; key initiatives you can help support; and lists of events, webinars, and activities taking place throughout the country. With 1 in 5 adults experiencing a mental health condition each year and NAMI reporting that 60% of Americans are concerned about the stigma surrounding mental illness, it is more important than ever that resources about mental health are easily available for those in need. We encourage you to share these resources widely and speak openly about the importance of mental health.
